September 15 to 21 is Canada’s Democracy Week. To celebrate it, nelson4pr, a local group advocating for proportional representation (Pro Rep), will be holding a free event at the Rotary BBQ shelter at Lakeside Park on Sept. 15 from 3 to 7 p.m.

Former MLA Corky Evans will be the keynote speaker.

The event will include painting Pro Rep lawn signs using upcycled paint, ordering proportional pizza, (how does that work?), and a good ol’ Kootenay potluck.

“It’s going to be a fun, family friendly celebration of democracy, as well as a source of information about the upcoming referendum on Pro Rep,” said local Fair Vote Canada leader Ann Remnant.

“B.C. has a great opportunity to add proportionality to its voting system in the referendum this fall. Across B.C., people from all political backgrounds are putting their energies together in grassroots groups, like nelson4pr, to promote proportional representation. The world is watching and the wind is in our sails. We are going to have a good time making democracy better in B.C.”
