Recycling for a good cause

For the past 10 months Krista Watts of BC Hydro has been collecting used printer cartridges from her office and nearby BC Hydro facilities to support the Nelson Food Cupboard.

Watts recently delivered the 68 cartridges that she had collected to Save-On-Foods in Nelson, where they were redeemed for 100 Save-On-More customer rewards points per cartridge. These points were collected using the Nelson Food Cupboard’s Save-On-More customer rewards key tag.

“This is a great way to protect the environment while also supporting our community,” said Watts, a natural resource specialist with BC Hydro.

Lauren Steeg, coordinator at the Nelson food bank, was pleased to receive the donation and encourages other businesses to do the same, explaining:

“This is also an excellent example of how a business or community group can show creativity, initiative and leadership in supporting a local charity. As the Nelson Food Cupboard provides a barrier-free emergency food service that sees over 1,000 visits every month, these points will go to good use, purchasing staple food items, fresh fruit and produce for our customers.”
