As people get older, the crowds, expense, volume levels and tripping hazards all make the thought of attending a summer concert in the park unappealing.

Which is too bad, because research into aging has found that listening to music promotes positive overall health, helps one to have a happier outlook on life, and even improves memory. Not to mention the sense of connection all humans have when they experience listening to music together as a group, especially when surrounded by fresh air, flowers and trees.

A unique project in Nelson will provide an outdoor concert for seniors.

“We wanted live music in the park that people of all ages could access and enjoy, so we teamed up with Cycling Without Age and put this little mini-concert series together,” explained Nancy Liknes, the project’s co-ordinator.

“We really hope that seniors will know that they are so welcome and every effort will be made to ensure that they are comfortable. The show will be shorter and the volume will be lower.”

Both free concerts will take place at Lakeside Park, under the Rotary BBQ shelter. Cycling Without Age will be offering free trishaw rides to folks with restricted mobility from the parking lot to the Rotary shelter.

Back for Cake, an eclectic acoustic folk band, will by playing on Aug. 21 and the Sarah McGlynn Trio will be performing jazz and soul standards on Sept. 8, both at 1:15 p.m.
