A trolley ride, parachute games, and T-ball made for a perfect afternoon at the park for a group of students from School District 8 (Kootenay Lake). Students, families, and school staff met for the inaugural Gathering for Students with Down Syndrome on Thursday, May 31.

“This was an event to bring everyone together and provide an opportunity for students, staff, and parents to meet,” said Shannon Carter, Speech Language Pathologist with School District 8. “Our students are spread out across our district so don’t often have a chance to connect.”

The day started with a special ride on the Nelson Streetcar #23, run by the Nelson Tramway Society, which the students loved.

Besides the streetcar, an afternoon of festivities took place at Lakeside Park, which included making bubbles, playing at the playground, and a healthy lunch. Also, the group used hand prints to make a commemorative piece of art to mark the occasion. While the students were engaged in activities, parents and school staff had the opportunity to meet and connect.

The event was organized by the School District 8 Kootenay Lake, with generous support from the Nelson Tramway Society, Safeway, Kootenay Co-op Grocery Store, and Cowan’s Office Supplies.

“It was a team effort, and I’m so happy the event was well-attended,” Carter said. “Our hope is to try to have a similar event each school year.”
