Walk or Wheel on Wednesday is an initiative happening at South Nelson Elementary this year to encourage students to walk or wheel to school.

South Nelson hopes to increase students’ understanding of the benefits of regular physical activity for themselves. They are participating in a project that uses the healthy living performance standards published by the Ministry of Education to see if they can increase this understanding.

Different activities have been held each week to show children walking or wheeling is a healthy choice for their body and brain, and also helps reduce traffic, which is good for the local and the global community.

The Walk or Wheel program is an example to students that it is possible to improve their life habits and set an example for others to do the same.

This week students “chalked their walk” to school! Colourful designs and messages adorned the sidewalks that lead to South Nelson.

In another event recently, students and families formed the longest “walking school buses” that they could by meeting up along the routes and forming long lines of walkers or wheelers.
