To prevent a possible derailment in the Nelson Chahko Mika Mall parking lot a stability subgrade assessment needs to occur as soon as possible so the historic Nelson Electric Tramway can open and operate in May for locals and visitors.

The cost is $80,000 for this assessment. Funds are being collected through community donations and pending grants that we hope materialize. Additional organizations and the City of Nelson are helping where they can, but we need your help too.

The tracks in the Chahko Mika Mall parking lot are starting to gradually separate, moving wider apart, which could potentially result in a derailment. The ties (wooden timbers) are buried under the concrete. To do an assessment approximately 15-to-21 metres of track, extending 0.6 metres on each side of the track, needs to be dug up and assessed. Timing is crucial to have the streetcar ready to operate in May.

The streetcar is a tourism attraction as well as part of the heritage of Nelson that has been here since 1899. The society is in its 30th year of operation. The streetcar, being 116 years old this year, needs constant attention to ensure it runs safely.

That upkeep also requires funds. This is where you come in: Please support this needed fundraising initiative to ensure the Streetcar, part of Nelsons’ character and heritage, is preserved and accessible for years to come.
