It’s not just the bees buzzing through the gardens at Taghum Hall.

That sound is the hum of creativity as young artists get painting, dancing, acting and making music in and around the hall during Creative Spaces summer art camp for kids aged seven to 12, which runs three separate weeks this month (July 10 to 14, 17 to 21, and 24 to 28).

Each summer, the hall hires artists who love to work with kids for Creative Spaces. This year, Kozmo Sammartino is the Creative Spaces program co-ordinator and the theatre instructor; Tatyanna Backus-Ostrikoff teaches art and nature crafts; musical instruction is by Johnny Ryan; and Paloma Doval offers dance.

The result? Happy, creative kids! There are still a few spots available each week, with subsidies available for folks who need them.

The darker side of summer is fire season, but getting our fire smarts in order improves our chances of breathing easy. On Wednesday, July 19 starting at 6:30 p.m., Taghum Hall hosts a FireSmart open house, with information tables and a presentation at 7 p.m. On hand to offer advice and answer questions are Ryan Gilbert (RDCK FireSmart program), Monica Spencer (Beasley Fire Department), and Wildfire risk reduction specialists with the Ministry of Forests, who will be doing some mitigation work in the area.

Folks who want to keep property safe will find all sorts of tools for their risk-reduction toolboxes. For anyone who’s been thinking that a neighbourhood plan is a good idea, here’s where neighbours can come together to get the ball rolling.

A Community Yard Sale on Saturday, July 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. is a chance for some folks to clear out and others to take home new-to-you treasures. The sale takes place outside, where the hall provides the tables for sellers to put up and take down, and sellers bring everything else. Set-up time is 8:30 a.m., and coffee will be on! The hall asks for 15 per cent of sales towards its oh-so-necessary kitchen rebuild project.
