The Tarrys and District Community Hall Society has a new board of directors and they are hoping to revitalize the hall and turn it into a true community centre.

Situated between Castlegar and the Slocan Junction, the hall in Tarrys was originally built and financed by local residents and used for community events and family celebrations.

While the area is steeped in Doukhobor history, in recent years new residents have chosen to move to this peaceful area and the demographics have changed to a multicultural community.

"The new directors of Tarrys and District Community Hall Society are trying to create a safe space and central hub for activities for all local residents to meet social needs and create a sense of belonging," says the non-profit society.

A free Meet and Greet family event is being planned for Sept. 14 from noon to 4 p.m. for residents of the area to meet new neighbours and reconnect with old friends. The event will include refreshments, games and crafts for children and a visit from Tarrys Fire Department Volunteers in their fire truck. Cake cutting will take place at 2:30 p.m.

All local residents and visitors are invited.

There is also a major, colourful addition planned for Tarrys Hall. In the near future, a mural will be painted on the long cement wall which marks the north boundary of the property.

The society says the almost 100-year-old heritage wall was originally the foundational wall for a horse stable. The mural plan includes colourful images that depict the historical significance of the wall.

"This landmark at Tarrys will definitely be noticed by all who travel the Highway 3A corridor," says the society.
