At the Nelson Public Library’s 100th birthday party on Friday, a good-natured crowd packed the Capitol Theatre for a varied program of performance and reminiscence.
The Playmor Junction Big Band wailed swing era classics and Slava Doval’s youthful dancers enthusiastically claimed every inch of the stage as their own.
Allison Girvan’s Lalin Ensemble suffused the room with delicate choral warmth, humourist author Terry Fallis cracked jokes about the process of writing his latest book, and Nelson writer Jenny Craig read from her prize-winning novel Gone to Pot.
But the highlight of the evening for many was a music video.
In the weeks leading up to the event, videographer Amy Allcock collaborated with library staff, singer Allison Girvan, and a stuffed crocodile to produce the celebratory and whimsical “Library Rock,” screened large above the Capitol stage, to the audience’s obvious delight.
