VIDEO: Happy birthday Kaslo

Village marks 125th birthday with reopening of city hall, sealing of time capsule

After eight years of restoration work, Kaslo City Hall officially reopened Sunday as the village marked the 125th anniversary of its incorporation.

The building, erected in 1898, is a national historic site. Thanks to the village’s perseverance and funding from the Columbia Basin Trust and other organizations, the building has been overhauled top to bottom and the second-floor courtroom, which had not been used for decades, is now one of the most stunning ballrooms in the Kootenays.

The village recently moved back into the building from its temporary accommodations in the Kemball Memorial Centre across the street.

Weekend festivities also included the sealing of a time capsule in the village vault, to be opened on Kaslo’s 200th birthday in 2093. Residents and visitors were encouraged to write messages to the future and place them in the wooden box.
