Nelson native Fred Wah, who is a former Parliamentary Poet Laureate for Canada, will run a unique workshop in the Touchstones Gallery on Sept. 30.

Writing on Water will consider juxtapositions between creative writing and images. Participants are asked to bring an image (photograph, sketch, painting, etc) of a local Kootenay waterway along with a short piece of creative writing (poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction) that relates to the photo.

Wah will introduce the topic with reference to his recent collaborative project on the Columbia River entitled Beholden: a poem as long as the river, which was displayed at Touchstones recently.

During the workshop, there will be time to look at, discuss, and listen to each person’s image/text. Digital projection is available and, since the workshop is limited to 10, participants are asked to bring 10 copies of their text to share. Attendees must pre-register at Touchstones Nelson and the cost is $20.

Wah has published a variety of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction over several decades.

This workshop is sponsored by Kootenay Co-op Radio and Touchstones Nelson, with support from the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance and the Osprey Community Foundation.
