The second opening for the 31st annual Nelson ArtWalk is Saturday. ArtWalk has become a highlight of the arts and cultural season offering the community a free event that showcases the work of local artists in business galleries. This year’s event hosts over 35 artists in 17 venues downtown and down to the waterfront.

This year the Nelson and District Arts Council is trying something different for the second opening. On Saturday between 6 to 9 p.m. participatory creative art spaces will be hosted throughout downtown. Each space will have a different art discipline and an instructor who will show you the basics and invite you to be the artist. You never know what hidden talents you might discover. There spaces are marked on the brochure map.

These spaces include steelpan drums with ethnomusicologist John Galm at Hall Street Park (near the gazebo by the Prestige Lakeside Resort), typewriters hosted by the Nelson Writer’s Salon at the Dominion Cafe’s patio, ukuleles with Catherine McGrath at the amenity area by CIBC, an interactive photobooth with Thomas Nowaczynski of Lightercyde Film Lab at Hall Street Plaza, and painting a canvas with Chrystyna Bykowa at Remedy Rx.

ArtWalk is all about the artists and this opening is no different. There will be new artists going into most of the venues making for a whole new ArtWalk experience.

The Nelson and District Arts Council thanks the business community for their continued support of ArtWalk. The venues open up their spaces and their walls in support of the local arts community and this event couldn’t continue without that support.
