Artists-in-residence from Vancouver showcase a selection of mixed medium pieces and productions at Oxygen Art Centre.

For August, Oxygen Art Centre will be hosting two artists-in-residence from Vancouver, Mutya Macatumpag and Monica Hepburn. They will be collaborating on a piece called Spectacle of the Lost Self which is a creative multi-disciplinary work in dance, theatre, music, writing and visual art that explores the darker manifestations of the relationship to self.

Mutya Macatumpag is an independent artist who traverses multiple disciplines as a dancer, actress, vocalist, choreographer and visual artist. As a professional performing artist, she has spent time in Montreal where she appeared at the Musee d’Art Contemporain de Montreal and Perverse Cite Fesitval among others.

Mutya is also an instructor of a dance fusion workshop called Free Form Footwork which combines hip hop, contemporary, and contact dance. Mutya will be offering this workshop for children, youth, and adults during her time in Nelson.

“We are very excited to have Mutya here in Nelson. Her workshops will be a fantastic opportunity for anyone who is interested in learning more about creative self-expression through dance,” says Nicola Harwood, the executive director of Oxygen.

Monica Hepburn is a writer and visual artist who works with a variety of storytelling styles and media. She has been involved in a range of creative endeavours such as illustrating the children’s book, Gwion the Little and the Cauldron of Becoming, designing a logo for Laughing Bean Coffee, and facilitating art workshops for children and youth. She has participated in Drawuary, which was a showcase of 31 drawings by 12 Vancouver artists.

During their time at Oxygen, Mutya and Monica will be experimenting with dance, theatre, music, writing, and visual art to explore the themes of isolation and relationship to the self. Spectacle of the Lost Self will examine a paradox where although we feel alienated, we are ultimately unified in our feelings of alienation.

It will also encompass ideas about how we can overcome our own egos and redirect our passions in order to find a greater purpose.

At the end of August, they will be presenting the piece to the public at Oxygen Art Centre. Mutya’s dance workshops will be held at the Moving Centre.
