Canadian guitarist Dale Kavanagh will be performing the inaugural Nelson Guitarworks concert on March 26.

Performing internationally with “overwhelming technique, powerful sound, and fantastic musicality” (Klassik Heute) she has given recitals in more than 70 countries in more than 1,700 concerts. Kavanagh has been based in Germany for over 30 years.

Widely considered one of the guitar world’s most gifted interpreters, Kavanagh will be performing an array of virtuosic music including works by Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos, the German Baroque composer Michael Praetorius, gems of the Classic-Romantic repertoire by Sor and Paganini, and music written for her by celebrated composers Carlo Domeniconi and Roland Dyens.

Kavanagh is an accomplished composer in her own right and several of her own works also feature on the program. Her vibrant and original works are played on stages the world over and she has written for top guitarists including new Nelson resident and classical guitarist Emma Rush.

Rush studied with Kavanagh in Germany in the 2000s and they maintain a deep friendship. Arriving in Nelson in January of this year, the first thing Rush did was search for a way to celebrate the classical guitar. Nelson Guitarworks was created to curate concerts, workshops, and lessons.

“I learned that Dale was playing in Vancouver and I immediately called her up to see if she could add a stop in Nelson to her tour,” said Rush. “She is one of the most inspiring artists I know, and I’m so excited about this concert.”

Kavanagh will play at St. Saviour’s Anglican Church on March 26 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25, available at Eddy Music or the door. Reservations and more information at 905-807-4792.
