Slava Doval’s DanceFusion is celebrating its lucky 13th Annual Showcase this weekend at the Capitol Theatre. Students ages four to 77 will perform choreography by eight instructors, showcasing hip hop, contemporary, acro, jazz and more.

The first year was held at the Nelson Legion with only 27 dancers and over the years it has grown exponentially. The fastest growing demographic at the studio is adults. Doval has noticed that adults are keen to find a space to be social, listen to music and move together, as well as challenge co-ordination skills and increase strength and creativity.

Dance is infectious and the movement is growing in Nelson. One of the crowd favourites is Dad’s Dance, and this year has seen an overwhelming uptake in participation. There was so much interest that Doval created two casts, as all the interested participants could not fit onstage at once.

“It was one of the coolest, scariest, and most endearing things I’ve ever done,” said Mitchell Scott, a past participant. “It was an experience both me and my two stepdaughters will never forget. It brought us closer, made us laugh, and created a story we’ll recall and share for many years to come.”

This year will be a journey through various music, styles and moods, and the dancers aim to share their passion for dance with the community. There are four shows — Friday, 7 p.m., Saturday, 2 and 7 p.m., and Sunday, 2 p.m. Tickets are available at The Capitol Theatre box office.
