The Haute Trash! Trash Fashion Show Competition and Art Exhibition will take place on Saturday, May 20, 7 p.m. at the Capitol Theatre in Nelson.

This exciting event will boast a runway style trash fashion show and art expo of designs crafted from post consumer waste and upcycled materials. The unique affair will also highlight a variety of music, dance and theatrical performances by some local gems, including the likes of the RhythmDance Trash Orchestra, among others.

Haute Trash! is a juried wearable art event showcasing a diverse array of artists, designers and performers of all ages who have submitted compositions in several design categories such as formal/semi-formal, seasonal wear, costumes/specialty, accessories and more. The top designs in each category will win cash and prizes donated by over 30 local businesses, and the Nelson Museum, Archives and Gallery will display some of the winners for a month after the event.

Twenty designers have entered the competition and are utilizing myriad used waste and upcycled materials for their creations including: newspaper; wrapping paper; old playing cards; plastic bags; beer cans; bottle caps; bubble wrap; old curlers: plastic bowls and lids; old socks; garbage bags; cat food bags; broken skateboards and toys; and much more.

While the idea of turning trash into fashion has been around for decades, this will be the first event of its kind in Nelson. With support from the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance, Marilyn Hatfield, Nelson’s Cultural Ambassador 2020, is spearheading this inclusive community event.

“For many of us the sheer volume of trash piling up globally and what to do about it feels insurmountable,” says Hatfield. “I am hoping this event will generate some awareness about the garbage we generate, our relationship to it and spark conversations for coming up with creative solutions for keeping items out of the landfills all while involving folks young and old in artistic pursuits and having a lively time with trash fashion, art and entertainment.”

Mark your calendar and come out to enjoy an all ages event sure to inspire!
