Ideas for a rom-com soundtrack

Nelson {vurb} contributor shares the soundtrack for the rom-com of his life.

Ever since I was a kid, I always loved a good romantic comedy (rom-com).

There’s something uplifting about watching two unlikely characters on the screen, eventually finding out that they love each other by the end of the film. I’ve always dreamed my life being a rom-com, and this is the soundtrack to it. Script style.

The Cave Singers – ‘Distant Sures’ (opening credits): INT. RECORD STORE – DAY – We see Dustin leafing through records. He sees a girl pick up a Lady Gaga vinyl. Dustin scoffs under his breath, she hears it. She goes over to Dustin with purpose. Clever banter ensues about music tastes and then this song comes over the speakers. Dustin suggests she buys this album, and then they go for waffles.

Van Morrison – ‘Moondance’ (pivotal moment scene): INT. WAFFLE HOUSE – NIGHT – We see Dustin and Amanda (name is established on the walk to the waffle house, and also that she’s a career girl who’s never had time for love) sit down and look at each other without saying anything. This song flips on the classic jukebox. Dustin asks Amanda to dance. She asks “Here? What about the people eating?” Dustin looks at her, smiles, and says, “Who cares?” They dance.

John Butler Trio – ‘Groovin’ Slowly’ (sweet love-making scene): INT. AMANDAS APARTMENT – NIGHT – We see Amanda hand Dustin a drink, and spill it all over his shirt. He removes it, revealing an eight pack and ripped body. He makes a joke about it being cold in here, then kiss. They move to the bedroom. End Scene.

The Beatles – ‘Here Comes the Sun’ (morning after scene): INT. AMANDAS BEDROOM – MORNING – We see Dustin leave a note for Amanda on her pillow reading “Those were some great waffles. Call me.” Amanda wakes up to the note, smiling.

The Drums – ‘Days’: (getting to know each other montage): EXT. OUTDOOR CARNIVAL- CITY – DAY (MONTAGE) – Dustin and Amanda shoot pellet guns at targets. Amanda wins Dustin a giant stuffed animal. They throw baseballs at bowling pins. Amanda wins Dustin a giant stuffed animal. Dustin and Amanda walk off with Dustin holding seven huge stuffed animals. (END MONTAGE)

Coldplay – ‘Till Kingdom Come’ (proposal scene): INT. CAR – NIGHT – We see Dustin and Amanda sitting in a car overlooking a city. Coldplay comes on the radio. Dustin mentions to Amanda that he made her a mix with this song on it, and hands her a CD case. She opens the case and we see a wedding ring in it. The face of the CD reads “Well, will you?” Amanda starts to cry and says yes.

Death Cab For Cutie – ‘Stay Young, Go Dancing’ (Closing Credits) – We see snapshots of the rest of their lives from their wedding, all the way to their 50th anniversary.

And Boom! Romance. Eat your heart out Nicholas Sparks.

So this movie didn’t have the “Boy screws up, boy has to make it better” or “Reconciliation scene.” Why? Because it’s my movie. Get your own.

The casting call will be held in early spring.

Please note, that the lead character will be very suave and probably portrayed by Ryan Reynolds.
