Kootenay Fiddle Camp returns live in July

Registration for the three-day camp is open until June 13

The Kootenay Fiddle Camp is returning in full force this summer.

For the first time in nearly three years, prominent instructors from across Canada are returning live to the Castlegar campus of Selkirk College this July, including Gord Stobbe, JJ Guy, Ray Bell, and Cathy Sproule. The goal of the camp is to help novice to advanced people of all ages and abilities to improve their fiddle, back-up guitar and/or piano skills.

The camp will run July 13 – 15.

Beginner workshops will go from 10 a.m. to noon. Tuition is $75 plus GST.

Intermediate workshops will go from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuition is $250 plus GST.

Co-sponsored by Selkirk College and BC Old Time Fiddlers #9, the camp will return to the format of three days of in-person learning. Camp includes instruction, jam sessions, and evening activities.

“We’re excited that we can get back to ‘normal’ and make some great music together again,” says Denise Chernoff, a volunteer organizer from the fiddlers. “It is three days of fun, fiddling, and friendship. We look forward to seeing lots of old familiar faces and many new ones this summer.”

The registration deadline is June 13.

Registering by the deadline is important both to ensure those interested reserve a spot before the popular event fills; as well to ensure the camp goes, as extensive advanced planning is required for this event .

To register go to selkirk.ca/fiddle-guitar-piano-camp or call 250-354-3220.

For those from out of town, accommodation is available at Kekuli House, Selkirk College residence. For more information, call 250-365-1227.

BC Old Time Fiddlers #9 offer two bursaries for young fiddlers who take lessons from local instructors.

Of note, the Selkirk College fiddle camp instructors will hit the stage for Music in the Park at Gyro Park in East Trail on July 13. These talented musicians put on a toe-tapping, great show of East Coast old time fiddling. The champion fiddlers will follow the 6:15 p.m. opening act by The Oot n’ Oots.
