The Lysander Piano Trio will perform at the Capitol Theatre in Nelson on April 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Formed during their studies at the Julliard School, the trio takes their name from a character in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The Lysander Trio has performed throughout the world and are known for their exciting programming, combining the works of lesser-known living composers with the masterworks of the chamber music repertoire. The group is comprised of violinist Itamar Zorman, pianist Liza Stepanova, and cellist Michael Katz.

The concert will feature Two Nguni Dances by Bongani Ndodana-Breen. Born in South Africa, Ndodana-Breen is of the Xhosa clan whose ancestors include the Nguni people. The first dance, Inyanga, comes from a traditional dance style used in cleansing rituals. Dancers pound the earth in heavy, deliberate downward motions. The second dance, Instomi, is based on traditional African children’s stories that are recited at night by the home fire. The tales describe fantastical worlds of magic trees, talking lions, evil baboons, cunning hyenas and wild elephants.

Also on the program is Rachmaninoff’s Trio No. 1 in G minor, “Trio Elegiaque.” Written in one-movement form, the piece is rich with intense passion and yearning melancholy culminating in a funeral march. To close the program, the Lysander Trio will perform the famous Archduke Trio by Beethoven.

Tickets are available at the Capitol Theatre in person, by phone, or online at www.capitoltheatre.ca. Admission is free for students aged 18 and under. Individual tickets are $32. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
