Myers checks back with Baby

Before he stashes it away in his rich theatrical vault, Nelson’s Lucas Myers is bringing the hilarious Hello Baby: An Instructional Lecture by a First-Time, Semi-Competent Father to the small stage one last time, and there are a few surprises in store

After a run around the Columbia Basin, Lucas Myers is bringing his one-man examination of pregnancy and fatherhood back to Nelson for a final weekend showing.

Hello Baby: An Instructional Lecture by a First-Time, Semi-Competent Father has been one of Myers’ favorite touring pieces, but the local actor and playwright hasn’t mounted the piece in Nelson since its original debut just after the birth of his first child.

“I’ll be putting it into the vault after this,” he says. “And I realized I only performed it in Nelson once, two or three years ago when I premiered it at he Capitol. I’ve toured it a lot, but I haven’t done it in town since then.”

Since its conception, the piece has expanded somewhat.

“[The title] doesn’t totally apply, because now I’m a two time semi-competent father,” Myers jokes. “The format is that it’s somebody giving a lecture to expectant fathers, and that kind of goes off the rails.”

The show includes several recurring Myers characters, including Randy the Benevolent Redneck from Creston, and Cliv — the star of Myers’ most recent production, DECK. There’s also a musical component, with numbers such as Nobody Warned Me Bout the Drool performed on ukulele, guitar and keyboard.

For this final run, material from Hello Baby 2: The Baby Strikes Back (written after Myers’ second child arrived) has also been added.

“That one was less about the pregnancy, and more just about having kids,” he explains. “So it’s not quite as specific in terms of the topic.”

Parenthood not only inspired much of Hello Baby (“I can’t say it entirely inspired it, or I’ll get in trouble,” Myers adds), it’s also inspired the scheduling for this final run.

“I’m going to do a matinee for all the parents that can’t go to see a show at 8 at night,” he says. “They can get some babysitting and go to a matinee at 2 p.m.”

Hello Baby runs at the Nelson Scout Hall March 19 at 8 p.m. and March 20 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Eddy Music or the door.
