Selkirk Pro-Musica presents its third concert of the 2022-23 season with Juno and National Jazz Awards nominee vocalist Melody Diachun performing The Music of Sting.
Sting is a prominent songwriter and solo artist who first became known as the leader of the legendary post-punk reggae rock band The Police.
The concert will take place at Shambhala Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27 with tickets available at Otter Books in Nelson.
Diachun will be accompanied by her contemporary jazz group consisting of David Restivo, piano and keyboards; Michael Occhipinti, guitar, guitar loops and ambient effects; Doug Stephenson, acoustic bass; and Tony Ferraro, drums.
“This is our Nelson album release concert celebration,” says Diachun. “The album was supposed to be recorded in June of 2020. We finally recorded in May 2022, and we’re excited to be able to bring our bandmate Michael Occhipinti from Toronto for a trio of B.C. album release concerts.”
With five albums as a leader, Diachun is a vocalist, songwriter, arranger, and a performer praised by All About Jazz magazine for her “soulful confidence, exquisite intonation, phrasing, and sense of time.”
In 2012 Diachun came to Nelson to join the faculty of the Contemporary Music and Technology program at Selkirk College. She continued on to become the program co-ordinator in 2015, and the chair for the School of the Arts in 2022.
