It’s a girl!
The first baby of 2025 has been born at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH).
Esmerelda Hazel Marie Austin-Gordon made her debut on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 2:52 a.m., weighing a healthy 7 lbs, 5 ounces (3325 g).
Her arrival was a delightful surprise for her parents, Millie Austin and Wyatt Gordon of Rossland, who had chosen to keep their baby’s gender a mystery until birth.
Both mom and baby are doing well, and the family left the hospital on Thursday, Jan. 9, ready to begin their new adventure together.
Esmerelda’s distinctive name, chosen by Millie, holds a special significance.
It’s inspired by Millie’s favourite series of books by author Terry Pratchett. Esmerelda “Granny” Weatherwax is a beloved character in Pratchett’s Discworld series, particularly in the Witches subseries.
Known for her sharp intellect, no-nonsense demeanour, and profound wisdom, Granny Weatherwax (Esmerelda) is a symbol of strength and wit — a fitting namesake for their little girl.
“She (Esmerelda) is an inspirational character who is a force of nature and uses her strong knowledge of self and others for good,” Millie and Wyatt share. “The name is also a nod to Millie’s gypsy heritage on her mother’s side.”
Her middle names (Hazel and Marie) are her grandmothers’ middle names.
The parents said she needed a strong, distinguished name because of her resilience through a long labour.
In addition, Millie and Wyatt express their deep gratitude to the midwives and nurses at KBRH for all their support and attentive care.
Congratulations to Millie and Wyatt on the arrival of baby Esmerelda.
Welcome to the world, little one!
As the first baby born at KBRH in 2025, Esmerelda and her parents are being celebrated with thoughtful gifts from local businesses, including Ferraro Foods, L’Bear’s Natural Foods, The Colander Restaurant, Lauener Bros. Jewellers, Shoppers Drug Mart, and a gift basket from the Area Pro-Life Society.
