Police are asking witnesses to two hit-and-runs to come forward.

Two hit-and-run incidents in Nelson on June 9 resulted in a pedestrian and a cyclist being treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

A news release from the Nelson Police Department states that at 9:43 a.m. a pedestrian was struck by a black truck at the intersection of Stanley and Gore Streets.

The victim told police that the impact caused them to lose consciousness for several minutes, but they then managed to continue walking to their workplace where a coworker contacted the police and the victim was taken to hospital.

In the second hit-and-run, which took place at 1:27 p.m. on the same day, the police news release states that a black truck hit a youth cyclist at the intersection of Third and Behnsen Streets.

The cyclist was riding along Third Street approaching the intersection with Behnsen Street when a black GMC 2015-2020 model Sierra truck stopped at the intersection. The cyclist, who had the right-of-way, rode through the intersection when the truck suddenly pulled forward, striking the rear tire of the bicycle and causing the cyclist to fall. The driver of the truck did not stop.

Witnesses in the area reported hearing the collision and observing the aftermath. The injured cyclist was transported to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The driver was described as a Caucasian man in his late 50’s-early 60s with a moustache.

The Nelson Police Department does not know if the two incidents are related, despite the similarity of the vehicles.

The department is actively investigating these incidents and urges anyone who may have witnessed one of these collisions or has information about the vehicle or driver involved to contact the police at (250) 354-3919, or by email at dispatch@nelsonpolice.ca, or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Anyone who passed by the area of either incident and may have dash cam footage is asked to come forward.
