The Playmor Junction Big Band is a community jazz band that has been performing around Nelson for over 30 years. As the new music director, I was very surprised that there is not more instrumental and choral music happening in School District 8. So we decided to put together a show that would be educational as well as entertaining and take it to the schools.
We are doing it in the evening so parents, kids, and the general public can participate. Admission is free or a donation will be accepted that will go to the band’s library fund.
The concert will showcase the different instruments in the band, what they sound like and how it all fits together, as well as the different music genres the band explores.
The hope is to inspire parents and kids to be involved with music as research has shown that there is no greater stimulation to the brain than playing music. It is also an avenue that one can continue to nurture as a lifelong learner.
The show at Trafalgar Middle School will also include their jazz band and an opportunity for the students to play alongside Playmor Junction.
The band visited W.E. Graham yesterday. Next up is the show at Trafalgar on Nov. 28, then to J.V. Humphries on Dec. 5. Each show begins at 7 p.m.
