A rescue dog that had been missing in Nelson for eight days has been found.

Polly, freed from a dog pound in Tijuana, Mexico in late January, was discovered by two Nelson Hydro workers on Lakeside Drive near the Nelson Airport at about 2 p.m. Wednesday.

“We saw him run across the road and under our truck,”said Dana Hamilton, adding he and fellow lineman Andrew Colgan stopped the truck immediately.

“He was hiding under our truck and all we had was some Gatorade,” said Hamilton, saying they were finally able to safely grab the dog after two attempts with the energy drink.

Polly was suffering a couple of injuries from its time on the streets of Nelson, including a missing toe on its left rear leg and a cut on the left rear paw, said Ron Andrew, branch manager at Nelson SPCA.

He said Polly was scheduled to be taken to a veterinarian for treatment.

The dog’s owner, Denise Maglio was ecstatic when told her dog had been found safe.

“Polly was just found! I’m so grateful to you and your paper,” stated Maglio, in an email yesterday. The Star published a picture of the dog and the word’s ‘Where’s Polly’ on the front page of the February 7 edition.

Polly, an eight-pound chihuahua who arrived in Nelson on January 29, slipped out of its harness on January 30, while being walked near Hume School, 310 Nelson Avenue.

Last week Maglio’s Facebook friends were rallying to try to find Polly as posters were printed up and distributed around town. Early this week Maglio, created a Facebook page called Searching for Polly in her bid to find the dog.

Polly was flown from San Diego to Canada on Monday, January 29 after being rescued from a dog pound in Tijuana.

Maglio said Polly would have been euthanized “in a few days” if she hadn’t rescued the animal.
