On July 30 I visited the new Hall Street Pier. Love it or hate it, the canopy definitely makes a statement and the view of the lake is extraordinary.
I found only one bench on the pier and no other seating, which I found odd. I was very excited to look down and see the pool. It looked very small but I walked down to have a closer look. I can’t tell you the depth of my disappointment, or the depth of the pool, as the bottom is covered with weeds. There is no seating or place to hang your belongings or a towel. More to the point, there is no change room so I had to abandon the idea of a dip.
There is one private dock attached to the pier. Where does the general public access the pier from the water? The sign for the pool area clearly says “No Mooring of Boats” and “No Fishing.”
I wandered a bit and spied one small, plain, smooth green building that hinted at being a public toilet. Exploring further I found lovely and extensive curved stairs leading down to the water on the western side of the pier. Or is this seating? Rather mysterious as to what these grand steps/seats are for.
The lack of signage, the minimal washroom, the lack of changing facilities, the lack of seating, the lack of boat access from the water — these seem like major flaws for a project that is meant to connect Nelson with the waterfront and serve as an event venue. I realize that there may be more improvements to come. I do hope so.
