We are so excited to welcome Omar Alzidi as a valued member of our staff and our community. Thank you for your recent article about his family’s inspiring story. Your presentation of the story, however, demonstrated poor editorial judgment.

The front page story was eclipsed by a picture of a local dog, and the headline on page two focuses on violence and negativity. The headline is incongruous with the photo of Omar and his charming family, and with the positive contribution that Omar and his family have already made here in the Kootenays.

Omar’s observation of the relatively important place of dogs in our daily lives couldn’t be better illustrated than your choice to prioritize a picture of a dog over the picture of Omar’s family. No matter how charming and photogenic Wilbur the dog may be, Omar’s story and his family are more important to our community and our values. On behalf of the Kootenay Co-op, we warmly welcome Omar, Amna, Hussain, and Obada, and we encourage our community to extend its warmth and hospitality to this amazing family.

David Reid,

(Kootenay Co-op Marketing and Communications Manager),
