Pat Henman will direct a dramatic reading of the play “Because I’m Your Mother, That’s Why!” at Taghum Hall on May 4. The reading features the voices of 25 community women.

Women in kitchens is an old stereotype; women for kitchens is a whole different ball of wax, as our mothers used to say.

“Because I’m Your Mother, That’s Why!” is a dramatic reading that doubles as a fundraiser for Taghum Hall’s long-awaited kitchen renovation.

On Sunday, May 4 at 7 p.m. — just ahead of Mother’s Day — 25 West Kootenay women will come together for a dramatic reading of this sensitive, funny, and poignant play. As part of the Taghum Hall Presents performance series, the play was originally written by the WOW (Women of Wolfville, Nova Scotia) Collective. Director Pat Henman, a Bluenoser originally, explains that the voices of these Maritime women could really be the voices of any mother anywhere.

“There are so many beautiful stories,” says Henman, including “the story of a child who will never speak a word, a teen who became pregnant in the 1960s, and a women who thanks her mother for creating a strong human who dreams big. There are references to Nova Scotia and other Atlantic areas, but we all have something in common: mothers.

“I love that poetry and music are interwoven between the prose, stories that are deeply personal and will remind us all of the love and struggles of families.”

Taghum Hall is delighted to work with Henman once again, following a series of sold-out performances of the play “Halfway There” last November. In this case, it’s advised that folks get their tickets early as there is only the one all-stops-out 25-voice performance.

“There are some wonderful talents people will know, and many more for people to discover,” says co-coordinator Heather Haake. “This is going to be a memorable reading.”

Tickets are $25 and are available at taghumhall.ca/events. Limited tickets will be available at the door.
