Selkirk Pro-Musica presents The Nelson Jazz Collective featuring Mike Fahie, on Friday, Nov. 29 at Shambhala Hall.
The collective is fortunate to welcome the New York City-based trombonist back to the B.C. Interior for a string of shows featuring his original music. Along with releasing three albums under his own name, Mike is the lead trombonist of several jazz ensembles in New York, including the four-time Grammy-nominated Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society. He also has many album, Broadway, and movie soundtrack credits to his name. He is the principal trombonist of the Grammercy Brass Orchestra of New York and has been on the faculty of the United Nations International School for over 20 years.
Audiences can expect inspired performances on a cross-section of music composed and curated by Mike, informed by his 20-plus-year career as a professional jazz musician in the world’s No. 1 location for jazz and improvised music. Mike’s recordings as a leader incorporate elements of modern and free jazz, but also include his strong affinity for classical music. The ensemble will endeavour to provide the audience with a true New York City jazz club experience, without having to leave Nelson.
The ensemble includes Mike Rud, a Juno award-winning jazz guitarist and songwriter. As an instrumentalist, Rud has played alongside some of the greatest jazz musicians of the era like Peter Bernstein, Kenny Wheeler, Herb Ellis and Joey DeFrancesco. As a songwriter and arranger, Rud won the 2014 Juno Award for his album entitled Notes on Montreal, a critically acclaimed musical portrait of the city.
