Trio Tangere perform Oct. 14 at Nelson's St. Saviour’s Anglican Church.

An innovative classical music ensemble will take the stage at St. Saviour’s Anglican Church on Oct. 14. The virtuosic Trio Tangere features three notable Canadian musicians playing classical guitar, seven-string guitar, and violin.

The trio musicians are well known on Canadian and international stages. Marc Djokic is one of Canada’s most prolific violinists. He is concert master of L’orchestre classique de Montreal, and has been a soloist with the National Arts Centre Orchestra and Toronto Symphony Orchestra among many others. Guitarists Jérôme Ducharme and Louis Trepanier are both members of the renowned Canadian Guitar Quartet with prestigious performances at the Guitar Foundation of America, Glenn Gould Studio, and National Gallery of Canada.

Of Trio Tangere’s unique instrumentation Trepanier says, “The combination of two guitars that can function as a unit or two separate roles, combined with the sustained sound of a violin that can soar, cry, or shred ... well that’s just magic!”

The group will be playing their own arrangements of fiery Spanish classics by Isaac Albeniz and music by the master of the Argentine tango, Astor Piazzolla. Written for the ensemble are sensational works by the American composer Clarice Assad and Canadians Christine Donkin and Craig Visser.

For a little musical chairs, the program also includes an intricate Prelude and Fugue for two guitars by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, and Kreisler’s virtuosic Scherzo-Caprice for solo violin.

Trepanier has played in Nelson before, but this will be the first appearance here by the trio.

“I’m very excited to bring my colleagues to Nelson! I’ve played there a few times, and I love the city – it is secluded yet grand, it’s rich in history yet really hip. I’m thrilled to share the experience with my bandmates.”

Trio Tangere performs Monday, Oct. 14, 7 p.m. at St. Saviour’s Anglican Church, 701 Ward St. The concert is presented by Nelson Guitarworks and tickets ($25) are available at EDDY Music or can be reserved at 905-807-4792.
