Affordable housing project proposed for Fairview in Nelson

The City of Nelson would lease the property to the SHARE Housing at a nominal cost.

A non-profit group has received initial funding from BC Housing to develop plans for a proposed 48 units of affordable housing on city-owned land in Nelson.

The SHARE Housing Initiative Society has received $250,000 to do design work and feasibility analysis for a building at 1306 and 1308 Fell Street, next to Selkirk College's Tenth Street Campus. The properties are currently used by the college as a parking lot.

The City of Nelson would lease the property to the society at a nominal cost.

SHARE's plan is to apply to BC Housing for funding in the early spring. But first, the land must be re-zoned from institutional to residential, and the group will make that application to council this fall.

BC Housing is a provincial agency that funds and develops housing for low-income people across the province.

If the funding application is successful, SHARE Housing hopes to complete the building by 2027, according to representatives of the society at Nelson City Council's Sept. 24 meeting. The building would be for residents who are working in Nelson and make a low-to-moderate income.

The SHARE Housing Initiative Society built Herridge Place at 102 Herridge Lane in Nelson, which opened in 2021.
