The City of Nelson is making changes to a popular recreation spot in Nelson, one that is especially loved by dogs and their walkers.
City crews are trimming and thinning trees, and doing some landscaping, along the dog walk beside Kootenay Lake next to the Nelson Airport.
"There has been very limited work of any sort along the dog walk for a number of years," said Chris Johnson, the city's general manager of community planning, climate and infrastructure, in an email to the Nelson Star.
"As a result, things had gotten quite overgrown. Staff took the opportunity this winter to return it closer to the original intent of the area by removing brush, clearing deadfall, and generally cleaning the area up."
Johnson said there were some areas that had become hard to access because they were overgrown.
"A great example is the number of benches that are now easily accessible that residents can enjoy. Additionally, there has long been an issue with dog owners not cleaning up after their pets, resulting in a higher risk to dogs, and other environmental and cleanliness concerns."
At council's March 4 meeting, speaking about this work, Johnson said people may be worried when they see the work now, "but then green-up happens and everyone says it looks wonderful."
