Nelson Fire and Rescue Services extinguished a brush fire on land owned by CPKC Rail (formerly CP Rail) behind the City of Nelson public works building on Monday afternoon.

Crews arrived to find a fire that measured 120 metres by 30 metres, according to a news release from fire chief Jeff Hebert.

"Their primary objective was to safeguard nearby buildings and limit the fire’s growth," the news release states. "Despite facing challenges accessing certain areas due to thick brush, their aggressive attack allowed them to gain control of the fire quickly. The firefighters remained on scene for more than two hours, patrolling the perimeter, hitting persistent hot spots, and ensuring the fire was completely extinguished."

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

"Nelson Fire and Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that campfires, including fires in fire pits, and fireworks, are not permitted in the city limits."
