UPDATE: Nelson man charged with arson after railway and park fires

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services extinguished a fire in a forested area of Gyro Park on July 24.

David Travis of Nelson has been charged with one count of arson following three intentionally set fires in Nelson on July 24, according to a July 31 news release from the Nelson Police Department.

"This charge follows a diligent investigation by our officers, and we are committed to continuing this investigation as additional charges may be forthcoming," an earlier news release stated.

On the evening of July 24, Nelson Fire and Rescue Services put out two simultaneous fires, one in Gyro Park near the playground, and the other in a wooded area on the south side of the CPKC (CP Rail) tracks near the Chahko Mika Mall. The location of the third fire has not been disclosed.

Travis is in custody and will appear in court on Wednesday, August 7.
