Nelson’s annual celebration of public art is back, slated for Aug. 9-11, and it promises to be a vibrant and engaging community event. This year's festival will feature an exciting array of activities, including live music and performances, workshops, mural explorations, and more, all free of charge and held in accessible spaces.

One of the certain highlights of this year's festival will be world-renowned DJ and producer DJ Kookum, who will headline the festival’s neighborhood block party in Railtown on Saturday, Aug. 10. DJ Kookum is also the official DJ for hiphop duo Snotty Nose Rez Kids. Celebrated for her electrifying performances and versatility, DJ Kookum captivates audiences globally while championing inclusivity and representation in the music industry.

The festival will also showcase the work of four talented muralists who were selected by an arms-length festival jury: Lidia Cao from Galicia, Spain; Anaïs Lera from Vancouver, B.C./France; Anto Otoya from Revelstoke, B.C./Colombia; and Sinixt artist Emma Noyes from Spokane, WA. In addition to the four official festival murals, there will be four additional artist-led mural projects happening throughout the community, adding to the artistic celebration.

The festivities will kick off on Friday, Aug. 9, with performers installed at various murals and restaurant patios throughout downtown Nelson from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. This evening promises to be a delightful blend of art and entertainment, as visitors explore the vibrant murals while enjoying live performances.

On Saturday, Aug. 10, the festival stage will take over the parking lot of the Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce at 91 Baker Street from 5:00 p.m.-10:30 p.m. This evening will feature a mix of live music, DJs, and dance performances, culminating in DJ Kookum's headline performance. The block party atmosphere will provide a lively space for people of all ages to enjoy.

The festival will conclude on Sunday, Aug. 11, with a series of free workshops at the Capitol Theatre from 12:00 p.m.-5:30 p.m. These workshops will cover a variety of topics, including mural creation, Zumba, poetry, and community choir. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with artists, learn new skills, and participate in creative activities.
