Two Castlegar residents have been charged with drug trafficking nearly a year after they were first arrested.

RCMP said in a statement Friday they first executed a search warrant on May 18, 2023 for a pair of Castlegar homes. That led to the discovered of suspected cocaine and items used for trafficking. Money and a 2013 Audi Q5 were also seized.

The Public Prosecution Service of Canada has now approved trafficking charges for Humberto Cancela, 64, and Silvina Cancela, 58. RCMP said two other suspects associated with one of the homes have since died.

“Our officers are committed to enforcing and preventing the sale of illegal drugs in our community,” said Sgt. Monty Taylor, Castlegar’s detachment commander, in a statement.

“This type of illegal activity will not be tolerated, and our detachment continues to arrest and hold those who commit drug crimes accountable.”

The Cancela’s next court date is May 1.
