The Village of Slocan and its waterfront.

The Village of Slocan is embarking on an ambitious journey to re-imagine its waterfront, transforming the former industrial mill site into a vibrant, community-driven space. With a focus on leveraging Slocan’s strengths, this transformative initiative aims to create a hub that reflects the values and aspirations of the community while offering new opportunities for economic diversity, sustainability, creative housing solutions, and year-round job creation.

A new public engagement project entitled Imagining Slocan’s Waterfront Commons has launched a digital hub and is working towards a community symposium event on May 24 and 25. We are excited to invite you –  residents, community groups, the broader regional community, and those who have an interest in this site –  to participate in shaping the future of this unique space.

“We are thrilled to give village residents and the broader community a chance to be at the forefront of this important project," said Jessica Lunn, Mayor of Slocan.

"This mill site represents both the important history of the community and an opportunity to look forward into our future. By engaging with local residents, businesses, and the community valley-wide, we can begin to imagine different opportunities for this space and begin to capture ideas that reflect the shared values and aspirations for the future of Slocan. These ideas will be captured throughout the process and will lead us into a future master planning process for the site."

We are excited to invite the community to the Slocan Legion for an inspiring weekend of learning and sharing. Events include panel discussions, design workshops, a keynote address with Shorefast, and more. There will be plenty of opportunities to learn more about the site and give feedback. To cap off Saturday’s activities, there will be live music at the Legion followed by more music beginning at 8 p.m. at the Lobby Bar and Grill with The Triple Malts Jazz Trio.

This space will capture ideas from different communities to be shared broadly with the Slocan community. We want to inspire the viewer to think about what’s possible for the mill site, and capture your thoughts and ideas along the way. Log on to learn more about the project and read inspiring stories.

We want to hear from you!

Through both the digital hub and symposium event the community will be able to give feedback on different themes and topics. We want to ensure your voice is heard. If there are other ways you would like to give feedback, please feel welcome to reach out to us directly.

The collective feedback will be used to guide the future conceptual development of the site, ensuring a future vision reflects the collective hopes of the community.

“This is not just about redeveloping a piece of land,” said Councillor Jordan Knott. “It’s about re-imagining what the Village of Slocan can be — how we can bring together different ideas to begin to imagine a space for both residents and the broader community.”

Community members are invited to join the conversation, learn more about the project, and stay up to date as new content is released by visiting us online at waterfrontcommons.ca, emailing info@waterfrontcommons.ca, or calling the village office at 250.355.2277.
