A strike notice set to end Thursday afternoon won't result in Kootenay Lake ferries being shut down.

The B.C. General Employees Union said the 80 members who are employed by Western Pacific Marine will continue to work through the end of the 72-hour notice while labour negotiations continue.

The job action would have only impacted the route between the Balfour and Kootenay Bay terminals. Two other cable ferries at Glade and Harrop are subject to an essential services order by the B.C. Labour Relations Board.

BCGEU said negotiations weren't successful Wednesday but will resume Oct. 21.

The union is also currently in separate labour negotiations with WaterBridge Ferries, which runs three routes on the Arrow Lakes and another northeast of Kamloops.
