The Nelson Nordic Ski Team proudly hosted the Clearwater Challenge on Feb. 23, offering skiers a chance to test their endurance and skills on the Clearwater trail.
This exciting event featured a seven-kilometre climb with 300 meters of elevation gain, culminating at the bell at the top. Participants could take on the challenge using either skate or classic skiing techniques, with some racing against friends and others striving to beat their personal bests.
Despite forecasts predicting miserable weather, participants were met with freshly groomed snow and fast conditions under an almost spring-like sun, making for an exhilarating and enjoyable day on the trails. The event drew enthusiastic skiers from the local community, as well as visitors from Rossland and even Yellowknife, reinforcing the spirit of camaraderie and adventure.
In the adult category for skiers 15 years of age or older, Dawson Abraham reached the top in an impressive 25 minutes 30 seconds, while Doris Haustleitner finished in 33 minutes.
Philémon Hétu conquered the climb in 29 minutes in the junior category, with Emily Olinek following closely behind at 34 minutes.
Kurstun Smith and Aleah Smith meanwhile both completed the climb in 36 minutes in the classic ski technique category.
The Nelson Nordic Ski Team extends heartfelt gratitude to the generous local businesses that made the event possible through their sponsorship: Gerick Cycle and Ski, Valhalla Pure Outfitters, Nelson Olive Oil, Snow Pack, Oso Negro, Sprout, La Ruelle Bakery, Vince Devito, and Big Cranium Design. Their support helped create a successful and memorable event for all participants.
The Clearwater Challenge continues to be a fantastic way to bring the ski community together, and the Nelson Nordic Ski Team looks forward to welcoming even more skiers next year!
