For James Gackle, becoming the new owner of Phoenix Computers in downtown Nelson wasn’t just a business move – it was a dream realized. Alongside him is Deus, his 18-year-old son, a self-taught computer enthusiast now training as a technician under Phoenix’s lead expert.
Together, they're turning the long-standing local shop into something deeply personal: a family-run business with strong community roots.
“Ever since my son started building computers at 14, we always joked about owning a shop together,” Gackle says. “When Phoenix came up for sale, I saw a real chance to make that dream a reality, and to give him a place to grow in a field he’s passionate about.”
This meaningful father-son collaboration is at the heart of Phoenix Computers’ new chapter, but the core values that built the business over the last 20 years remain firmly in place.
“We’re still the same Phoenix Computers that Nelson residents have relied on for decades,” Gackle says, "I am very proud of the team we have. I couldn't have done this without them. They all make sure Phoenix Computers continues being the community staple that it is. They each bring their individual talents and knowledge to the business every day, and make Phoenix Computers the best computer store in the Kootenays."
Beyond standard computer repair and diagnostics, Gackle is eager to let the community know about a range of lesser-known services Phoenix offers, including cell phone repairs, game console repairs and custom computer builds – all handled with the same care and expertise customers have come to expect.
A seasoned accountant experienced in supporting local small businesses, Gackle brings a strong business background to the role, but what matters most to him is community.
“I’ve lived in Nelson for 15 years and I’m committed to keeping Phoenix locally owned and deeply involved in our city,” he says. “We’re already looking at ways to support local events and sponsor community initiatives.”
Whether you're dealing with a broken phone, a sluggish laptop, or you're dreaming up your next custom gaming rig, Phoenix Computers is ready to help – with a personal touch you won’t find anywhere else.
