It's said that some golf legends were familiar with the sport at an early age, including Tiger Woods when he picked up a club at 18 months, Bubba Watson at six years old and Kathy Whitworth at 15 years old.
For many families, golf has been a game that brings people together, and golf lovers in the West Kootenays have even more reason to hit the fairways this year. With a growing number of parents and children enjoying the game together, Balfour Golf Course is excited to introduce the Parent Pass – a brand-new initiative designed to make family golfing more accessible, fun and rewarding.
For more than five years, the club has offered free golf to kids 13 and younger after 2 p.m. when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Recognizing the program's popularity, and the growing demand for more family golf opportunities, the club developed the Parent Pass to provide parents and children time together on the course.
A family experience
“The idea is to increase the quality of your family time – getting outdoors, exercising, learning a game that can be played for the entirety of ones life, one that has been growing in popularity in a big way the past five years,” says Craig Wilkinson, Balfour General Manager.
The Parent Pass is designed to make it easier for families to bond over golf, ensuring that young players not only develop their skills but also learn important aspects of the game such as etiquette and strategy.
“It’s good to have an experienced parent there with you, especially for younger kids, to help them learn the etiquette and feel comfortable on the course,” Wilkinson says, noting the structured support of the Parent Pass aims to create an enjoyable and educational experience for kids while making family golf outings more accessible.
Exciting summer programs for junior golfers
In addition to the Parent Pass, the club is ramping up its junior programming with two exciting events this summer:
- Adult-youth golf event – a special tournament to promote teamwork between parents and young golfers.
- Junior golf league – A new weekly summer program to help kids develop their skills, meet fellow young golfers and enjoy friendly competition.
There's no better time to dust off the clubs and make meaningful family memories this summer, all while inspiring your young golfers to develop a lifelong love for the game!
