For nearly three decades, Valerie Semeniuk has been helping the people of Nelson turn houses into homes.

“We started in 1996 as a silk flower and gift basket shop in a tiny location, and just kept growing,” says Semeniuk, owner of Kootenai Moon Furniture, a business that reflects her passion for beautiful interior design.

"It was all organic. I listened to what people needed, followed the trends and kept learning.”

Semeniuk's design philosophy is grounded in research and responsiveness. She regularly attends trade shows and monitors emerging trends to keep her offerings fresh. “I’ve always loved working with people. This is my creative outlet, but it’s also about motivating others and watching them grow,” she reflects.

As the only dedicated home décor store in Nelson, Kootenai Moon fills a niche in the community. “People want beauty in their lives. That’s what draws them here,” says Semeniuk, whose store provides access to styles and selections typically found only in larger urban centres, without the need to leave the Kootenays.

Semeniuk also supports local initiatives like the local business associationsand the Women’s Transition House, using her resources to uplift others.

“That spirit of generosity and resilience has shaped Kootenai Moon from day one. Whether furnishing a new home, adding the finishing touches to a renovation, or simply looking for a thoughtful gift, customers return for the quality, selection and service they find at 115 Hall St."
