A pile of election signs, many of which belong to Nelson candidates, were found in a ditch in Krestova last week.
Montana Burgess noticed approximately 30 signs during her morning commute Friday. She gathered them up on her way home the same day.
She said it seemed as though no one candidate was targeted. Nelson mayoral candidates Deb Kozak and John Dooley both had signs in the pile, as did several council and regional district candidates.
“It seemed like a whole bunch of political signs, a couple house-for-sale signs and a ‘Slow For Cats’ sign,” said Burgess. “That’s very weird.”
Councillor Janice Morrison later picked up the signs to return to their owners.
Burgess said she has also contacted the Nelson Police Department, which last week put out a statement reminding residents that anyone caught vandalizing election signs can face charges.
“Although elections can bring out very strong emotions and opinions, the Nelson Police Department would like to remind the public that offenders can face charges under the Criminal Code if caught,” Sgt. Corey Hoy said in the release.
Morrison later confirmed to the Star that the “Slow For Cats” sign had been returned to its owner and his ginger cat.
