One person was injured during a house fire in downtown Nelson on Wednesday morning.

Nelson Fire and Rescue said the fire at 1214 Front St. was reported at just over 8 a.m. and was contained before it could spread to an adjacent residence.

Fire chief Len MacCharles said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Eighteen firefighters responded to the fire with two engines and two utility vehicles.

MacCharles said the closest fire hydrant was located outside the residence and had only just been cleared of snow the previous day.

Nelson Fire and Rescue is asking the public to assist in shovelling out hydrants around the city that haven’t already been attended to by its members. More snow has been forecast for the city beginning Wednesday evening.

The incident forced the closure of Front Street until noon, with traffic rerouted around Chahko Mika Mall.
