Area restriction imposed at Fry Creek wildfire near Johnsons Landing

The BC Wildfire Service has implemented an area restriction for the vicinity of the Fry Creek wildfire, located approximately 15 kilometres north of Kaslo on the east side of Kootenay Lake.

In a Sept. 11 news release, the BCWS stated that the purpose of the area restriction is to protect the public in areas where fire suppression activities are taking place.

The news release gives the following location details for the restriction:

“Commencing at the bottom of the Kootenay Joe FSR North to Gar Creek. Following Gar Creek northeast to the height of land on the southwest end of Kootenay Joe Ridge. Following Kootenay Joe ridge on the height of land to Stanley Creek before heading southeast down Stanley Creek to Carney Creek. Heading down Carney Creek to Fry Creek south to the bridge crossing Fry Creek near the west edge of the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy Park then north to the point of commencement. NOTE: Travel is not permitted on the Kootenay Joe FSR.”

The lightning-caused Fry Creek wildfire, discovered on Aug. 25, covers 150 hectares as of the morning of Sept. 12.

A person may enter this area only if they are:

• travelling to or from their principal residence that is not under an evacuation order,

• travelling to or from their private or leased property for the purpose of accessing his or her secondary residence or recreational property, that is not under an evacuation order,

• using a highway as defined in the Transportation Act,

• travelling for the purpose of supporting wildfire suppression or enforcement patrol activities.
