The area restriction at the Briggs Creek wildfire 11 km southwest of Kaslo has been rescinded, according to a news release from the Southeast Fire Centre.

“As the fire behaviour and activity has decreased, firefighting personnel no longer need to restrict public access to operate efficiently and safely in the area,” the news release states.

The area restriction prohibited travel in an area bounded by Hwy 31A, Mt. Chipman, Kyawats Mountain and Desmond Creek.

An evacuation alert for the Kaslo Creek South Fork Road community was rescinded on Aug. 22.

Discovered on Aug. 1, the fire covered 2,160 hectares as of Sept. 2, when there were 28 firefighters and one helicopter at the site.

Nearby communities can still expect to see smoke from the fire over the coming weeks.

“Before entering any area affected by a wildfire, members of the public should be aware that significant safety hazards may be present,” the news release states. “Trees that have been damaged by fire might be unstable and could fall down. Ash pits can be hard to detect and can remain hot long after the flames have died down.”
