Avalanche problems persist in B.C.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre has released another special avalanche warning for much of south and central B.C., citing weak layers buried in the snowpack.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre has released another special avalanche warning for much of south and central B.C., citing weak layers buried in the snowpack.

The warning covers the Columbia Mountains, the northern and southern Rockies, the Mountain National Parks (Rogers Pass, Banff, Yoho, Kootenay, Jasper and Waterton Lakes) and Alberta’s Kananaskis Country.

The warning is valid until the end of Monday.

The centre is asking backcountry users to stay away from large, steep and complex slopes and stick to simple terrain below the treeline.

The Kootenay Boundary region has an avalanche rating of three or “considerable” for alpine areas and at the treeline. Below the treeline, the rating drops to one, or “low.”
