Municipal leaders from across Canada will be coming to Nelson in September for a Federation of Canadian Municipalities meeting.
“It was an extensive two-year selection process to be able to host this prestigious event,” says Mayor John Dooley.
“We are extremely excited that Nelson was chosen. It’s a great opportunity to showcase our region. We are looking forward to providing a forum for discussion, right here in Nelson, for issues of concern to municipalities all across Canada.”
The Federation of Canadian Municipalities will meet in Nelson September 7 to 10.
During the June annual meeting of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities held in Halifax, Dooley was re-elected to his fourth term on the organization’s board of directors.
The board is made up of provincial caucuses, and each board member is then appointed to various committees.
The Federation of Canadian Municipalities represents the interests of its 2,000 member municipalities on policy issues that are handled at the federal level.
“Over the past five years I believe the [Federation of Canadian Municipalities] has grown as an organization. It’s become very strategic in prioritizing the needs of municipalities and advocating on behalf of municipalities,” says Dooley.
The mayor normally travels to Federation of Canadian Municipalities board meetings across Canada three times a year.
