The Regional District of Central Kootenay has set aside $12,000 for improvements at Morning Mountain in Blewett.
The money, which comes out of the $187,000 left in the insurance settlement from the old ski hill lodge which burned down in 1999, will be used to secure the site.
“We haven’t made any long-term decisions but we had an estimate worked out for gates, a kiosk and some remedial work,” says regional director Ramona Faust. The work is intended to prevent things like mudbogging, tree cutting, and bush fires.
Once they have a handle on those things, Faust hopes to see some basic amenities provided including picnic tables, washrooms, and garbage cans.
A recent public meeting saw strong support for preserving Morning Mountain as a recreation area. The Nelson Cycling Club recently applied for tenure over a portion where the annual Fat Tire Festival is held.
