City council draws up final priorities

With about half a year left in their terms, Nelson city councillors are making their last to do list.

With about half a year left in their terms, Nelson city councillors are making their final to do list.

Included in the 17-item list are recommendations from several major reports commissioned by council over the last year, including the Downtown and Waterfront Master Plan and a new affordable housing strategy.

According to the list, council could greenlight improvements to the so-called Railtown District at the south end of Baker Street, including proposed upgrades to the Cottonwood Falls farmers' market and surrounding trails. Hall Street would also see some action: making the street two-way and drafting a design for a public plaza recommended for the block of Hall above Baker Street both made the list.

On the housing front, council plans to incorporate policy from the Housing Strategy into its official community plan, and pass a bylaw establishing a housing reserve fund.

Council also hopes to adopt the Heritage Register, finish and adopt a Community Energy and Climate Change Plan and bring a bylaw on the keeping of urban chickens back to the council table.

While the list wasn't formally adopted by council at its Monday meeting (an information-only committee of the whole), it should be back for approval when council next meets in June.
